Summary
The 2026 eo Roundtable Annual Conference was held in Beijing, jointly hosted by the magazine editorial office of Southern Energy Observation (Southern Power Grid Digital Media Technology Co.) and the School of Applied Economics at Renmin University of China, under the theme of resilience and open cooperation toward a strong energy nation, with over a hundred participants from government, industry, universities, think tanks and media; the eo Roundtable expert database was established at the meeting. China Southern Power Grid said it will work in six areas for the 15th Five-Year Plan: power supply security, green and low-carbon transition, technology innovation, quality services, resource allocation and international cooperation. A researcher proposed three paths for power market reform: building a unified power market with provincial and inter-provincial coupling, advancing feed-in tariff reform with spot price discovery, and shifting capacity compensation toward system-demand-based reliability procurement; simulation of the East China grid shows inter-provincial economic mutual support is the most effective single measure for regional supply security. A scenario simulation puts nuclear power at about 4% of installed capacity and 15.1% of generation by 2060 under a fast-decarbonization pathway. Participants flagged strongly fluctuating computing-centre loads as a future challenge, noted Chinese green certificates have been fully recognized by RE100 with cross-border environmental value being put into practice, and said cooperation should move from product exports to standard exports amid the EU carbon tariff.
